Sheriff Peralta and Deputy Mapstone:

To die; to sleep, no more. SOLVE THE

CASE.

Sly

Consciousness of the stench went away for a few seconds. Another dead man with answers I needed.

I said, “What was Clevenger’s reputation?”

“Sterling. Nobody had a bad word to say about him. I saw him at the fortieth-anniversary event.”

“Files?”

Peralta broke out of his tough-guy expression, looking puzzled.

“Files!” I waved a helpless hand. “Have they checked to see if he had files here on the Page case? Diaries, office calendar, anything that could help us? Or was the house tossed and were things taken?”

“No evidence of a burglary. I doubt it about the other stuff. I’ll check.”

“How did he get in?”

Peralta said it looked like one of the Clevengers let the killer in. The alarm system was working but not armed. The panic button was never activated. To me, this opened some promising possibilities, that maybe the couple actually knew Ryan Garrison and didn’t see him as a threat.

“Sounds like a reach to me.” Peralta quietly cleared his throat. “We don’t even know for sure it was Garrison. What if Sleigh did it herself?”

Young unis dutifully stepped aside. We walked out to the street and I huffed in gloriously polluted air that at least didn’t smell like perdition.

Once we were out of their earshot, I continued: “You know better than that. It was Garrison. Nearly sawing off a man’s head takes serious upper body strength. There’s something else. Have someone get the Greenbaum murder book from Phoenix PD, the whole damned thing. Let’s see what was held back from the newspapers or never leaked out. Things you couldn’t find today on the Internet. If that murder was faithfully repeated here, with all the details, our boy might be something more than your average psycho.”

He put his hands on his hips. “Anything else, Your Majesty?”

“That’ll do for now.” I did my best imitation of Lindsey’s smile.

“Mapstone, I don’t even know what they mean, ‘solve the case.’ How? What does that mean? Disclosing new information? Finding a suspect who’s still alive and was never prosecuted?”

I shrugged and turned away.

“Where are you going?” he demanded.

“To check on Tom Goldstein.”
